OUR FOCUS:

Friends of Mesila is an organization founded to aid Mesila in it's mission to lend a helping hand to all members of the refugee and migrant worker communities in Tel Aviv, Israel. Our organization, however, believes that children lay at the very center of these communities and has designated adolescents, youth and children as the special focus of our efforts. We seek to raise awareness for and facilitate Mesila's solutions to the situation of the refugee child. Of Mesila's three focuses (Aid, Treatment, Advocacy), our organization seeks to facilitate at all stages.
THE BABYSITTER PROJECT: Refugees in Israel, if they can find work, are forced to labor intensively for dozens of hours a day in order to provide for their families. As a result, children are left alone at home--a dangerous situation--or are left at any of the number of "Babysitting centers" in southern Tel Aviv. The condition in these "centers," often small apartments with thirty or more children, is not good. Children are kept in cage like cribs for the duration of their stay, are not interacted with or allowed to move around, and are expected to keep quiet. "Troublesome" children are often beaten.
